Above
The Mark uses Microsoft Word™ to
allow you to quickly build a feedback document from comments or remarks which
are themselves Word™ documents. Created by a lecturer frustrated by the
repetition of writing comments on lab reports, it has cut his report marking
time from over 2 hours to less than 30 minutes, reduced tired fingers and now
even the students find it legible!

Imagine having pre-printed ‘sticky labels’ each
containing an approving or constructively critical comment. Imagine how quickly
feedback is delivered by sticking these on a page, maybe you’re already doing
that with ‘copy-and-paste’. Using Microsoft Word,™
Above The Mark gives you a virtual notepad to ‘stick’ as many
of these comment ‘labels’ into a Word™ document until you are
satisfied that your feedback is complete. Print it and your job is done.
You can see this in action with four students, Sally, Jim, Rob and Fiona. Fiona has produced an excellent submission and only needs a simple, approving comment. At the other extreme, Jim’s submission content is questionable and rather brief, although he merits a praising comment for a good graph. Above The Mark saves you enormous time by not having to re-write these repetitive comments, yet delivers them in a unique, personalised combination to each student. Co-operative sharing of comments with other markers can cut the time that you spend even further.

As the report is constructed, pre-written comments or remarks are ‘single-click’ selected to build a simple report ‘outline’. This outline can be continually reviewed with components added, modified or deleted until the required report content is achieved. Finally, a single button press turns the outline into a single Microsoft Word document. The report components are themselves Microsoft Word documents and can contain all possible Word formatting including pictures, providing complete flexibility in the report design and layout.
Reporting is based on ‘classes’ of one or more ‘students’, and Above The Mark displays an optional photo of each student as an aid to the user. Classes can be switched easily, making it a simple task to provide regular reporting as required in a teaching environment.
Above The Mark can be used for
· Student lab book marking. No more laborious hand-written comments. Several students will make the same errors and achievements, allowing a single correction or praise to be documented for use in any students personalised report. (My handwriting is terrible and I’ve cut my own lab marking from 2 hours down to 30 minutes this way!). Photos of each student help too.
· Personnel assessment or interviewing. Most personal traits can be pre-defined and entered into Above The Mark as ready-to-use comments. Whilst reading CV’s or as part of a personnel interview, you can quickly build a report outline tailored for that person resulting in a clear concise summary.
· Marketing surveys. Expected customer responses can be pre-defined and made available as ready-to-use comments in Above The Mark. Whilst interviewing customers, their responses can be selected and built quickly into feedback reports.
Above The Mark works with all versions of Microsoft Windows and requires Microsoft Word 97 or later.
